Lung Metastasis

A lung metastasis is a secondary malignant tumor in the lung that has originated in a primary cancer somewhere else in the body. Lung metastases can come from a primary lung cancer, but this usually occurs only late in the disease after there are metastases from the lung cancer in other organs of the body, usually bone metastases. Lung metastases can sometimes be cured with surgical resection, provided that

  • the primary tumor has been controlled
  • there are no other metastases
  • the lung metastases can be completely removed by a surgical operation
  • the patient is in good enough condition to withstand the operation and
  • there is no better treatment i.e. chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
