What is a metastasis?

Metastasis is spread of the cancer out of the lung and into other parts of the body.

The most common site of metastasis is to the lymph nodes in the chest.

Lung cancer also metastasizes to the

  • bone,
  • brain,
  • adrenal glands and
  • liver,

in approximately that order of frequency.

Less commonly, it may move to other organs in the body.

The presence of metastasis puts the patient into Stage IV.

A lung metastasis is a malignant tumor in the lung that is a metastasis from a tumor in some other part of the body that has moved to the lung.
